Departmental Overview

New Student Services (NSS) empowers undergraduate students to succeed and facilitates their transition to UC Berkeley. This process is known as the Golden Bear Experience, which consists of two parts: Before Students Arrive (advising and prep, online) and After Students Arrive (Move-In, Golden Bear Orientation, and Getting Your Bearings, on campus).

The overarching goals of the Golden Bear Experience are to:
*Welcome new students into UC Berkeley's scholarly community and lay the foundation for fostering their intellectual identity
*Create opportunities for participants to gain an understanding of academic requirements
*Create opportunities for participants to connect with university and college resources, services, and support structures
*Create opportunities for participants to engage with campus traditions and the range of UC Berkeley's unique cultural communities
*Create opportunities for participants to engage with their peers and the broader campus community
*Set the path for a lifelong relationship with the campus

New Student Services is a department that reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students Office within the Division of Student Affairs.

The Division of Student Affairs aims to advance the learning and personal growth of students by providing leadership, services, and opportunities that enable students to succeed in and contribute to a diverse and global society. Responsibilities

The New Student Services Program Coordinator has primary responsibility for coordinating transitional programs for 8,500 new students and their family members each year. The Program Coordinator creates programs for students that will assist them in building relationships to foster leadership, personal growth, and meaningful engagement with faculty and advisers, to make connections with campus resources, to become involved as active leaders in campus life so they will become critical thinkers and engaged leaders. The Program Coordinator assists in Golden Bear Orientation programming, student staff training, and student coordinator supervision. The Program Coordinator serves as a key individual in the development of student leaders by researching and executing training and the supervisory structure for 750 Orientation Leaders and 60 Orientation Mentors. The Program Coordinator will also oversee a component of new student transition outside of Golden Bear Orientation. Student transition begins as soon as they accept their office of admission and extends into the first semester. Golden Bear Orientation plays an integral role in that transition, but must be supported before and after with intention that requires building relationships with many campus partners.

Required Qualifications

* Master s Degree in related professional field required or Bachelor s Degree and/or 5 additional years equivalent experience/training
* Thorough knowledge of undergraduate (and parent) orientation and transition programs.
* Knowledge of student development theory, multicultural competencies, advising and mentoring competencies; emerging research, and leadership development and training.
* Ability to prioritize, exercise initiative, and demonstrate sound judgment, while effectively executing numerous tasks in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with a diverse population.
* Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of student records following confidentiality rules established by FERPA, the state
* Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
* Requires verbal and written communication skills, facilitation, active listening, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills.
* High level of organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

* Previous experience in orientation or new student-focused department
* Program management of large campus events for students.
* Knowledge of interpersonal violence prevention in a higher education setting
* Demonstrated experience supervising student staff
* Curriculum design and teaching experience of an undergraduate program, course, or seminar.
* Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

Salary & Benefits

Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is $57,000-$62,000.
