Advanced Imaging Specialist Stanford University Job Number: 83030 Job Code: 4953 Job Grade: H Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 3 (LSRP3) lead scientist for the new lattice light sheet microscope in the School of Medicine, Beckman Center's Cell Sciences Imaging Facility (CSIF). The CSIF provides high resolution, state-of-the-art technologies for imaging and analyzing the molecular and structural organization of cells and tissue as well as bioengineered materials to all Stanford University and industry researchers. The facility offers sophisticated and demanding microscopy techniques (e.g. super-resolution, confocal, FLIM, FRET, FRAP, 2-photon live cell imaging, photo-activation and uncaging, array tomography) as well as image processing and analysis. LSRP3 will apply advance knowledge in both the theory and application of lattice light sheet microscopy as well as other advanced imaging techniques (e.g. confocal, 2-photon TIRF, super resolution). The LSRP3 will be proficient in optics and have the ability to align and tune laser tables. The candidate will likely have experience in cell culture techniques, live and fixed sample preparation for light imaging, and fluorescence based immunohistochemistry labeling of cells as well as microscope imaging of subcellular and tissue level structures. The applicant should have a wide ranging knowledge of molecular, cellular and whole organism anatomy and function, particularly those related to the common model organisms and diseases (e.g. cancer) studied by Stanford's research community. The position further requires experience using image analysis, visualization and processing software (e.g. ImageJ/FIJI, Volocity, Imaris, Huygens). Experience with dealing with large data sets (several TBs) and file server management is desirable. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and multi-tasking ability, as well as excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Experience in a microscopy core/facility environment is preferred. Duties include (but not limited to): Maintain and operate the lattice light sheet microscope and occasionally other microscopes in the facility. Train and provide support to the users of the LLSM. Conduct complex and advanced imaging experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods. Will advise, design and help execute advanced and complex, advanced imaging experiments of both fixed and live samples, with students, researchers. Will support and supervise facility director-approved BSL2 imaging experiments. Will develop and provide as needed, weekly/daily training sessions for students, post-docs and other researchers in the proper and safe operation of high-end imaging systems as well as on image processing and 3D rendering software. Assist facility director with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants (e.g. S10 instrumentation grants). Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project. Lead and or participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools. Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the methods and results section. May be a co-author on publications depending on level of intellectual contribution. Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences. Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; propose new research directions based on new advances discussed in literature. Oversee supply and equipment budget under minimal supervision of facility director. Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings. Supervise and train new staff or students as needed, including hiring, performance management, and related duties (e.g. monthly facility billing routines). Provide instruction on techniques and consultation on project work. - Other duties may also be assigned. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires advance knowledge in both the theory and application of light microscopy methods (e.g. widefield microscopy, laser scanning, SPIM, and deconvolution microscopy) including, ideally, lattice light sheet microscopy. It also requires an understanding of optics and the ability to align and tune laser tables. The candidate will likely have experience in cell culture techniques, live and fixed sample preparation for light imaging, and fluorescence based immunohistochemistry labeling of cells as well as microscope imaging of subcellular and tissue level structures. The applicant should have a wide ranging knowledge of molecular, cellular and organismal anatomy and function, particularly those related to the common tissue and cell lines, model organisms, and diseases (e.g. cancer) studied by Stanford's research community. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and multi-tasking ability, as well as excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and four years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related scientific field and two years relevant experience; or PhD in related science field. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED): Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles, particularly those related to biological light microscopy and optics. Expert level knowledge in advanced microscopy imaging applied to research in a relevant discipline. Proven research ability: Problems solving, flexibility. Capability to be self-directed and think innovatively. Experience of experimental design and integration. Proven ability to work with biological samples (e.g. cell culture and/or tissue). General computer skills, experience with databases and scientific applications, and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs. Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment. Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential. Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately. Developing project management skills. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds. Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts. Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls. Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job. Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours. Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
