Job Description:

Anatomical Services Specialists handle the preparation and care of anatomical material generated by the Program. These materials are subsequently allocated for study to various internal and external teaching and research programs.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Specimen preparation: Including preparing preserved and non-preserved specimens for education and research
  • Maintaining specimen inventory and tracking: Ensures that the locations of all specimens are known at all times
  • Database entry and maintenance: Maintains accurate records in system-wide comprehensive inventory and tracking database
  • Lab maintenance: Ensures lab is clean and in working order, maintains lab supplies and equipment
  • Requestor site visits: Carries out site visits/inspections of requestor facilities as assigned
  • Specimen delivery/transport: Using Program vehicle, transports specimens to requestor facilities, as assigned
    The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.The salary range for this position is $87,900 - $187,700 (Annual Rate).The UCSF Willed Body Program is responsible for overseeing the donation of whole body donors to UCSF for education and research. All aspects of donation, from initial donor registration through final disposition of a donor, are overseen and coordinated by the Program. Technical staff handle the preparation and care of anatomical material generated by the Program. These materials are subsequently allocated for study to various internal and external teaching and research programs.
    Required Qualifications
    • Associate degree in mortuary science or equivalent
    • At least five years' experience in funeral service or donated body programs
    • At least two years' technical experience in preparation techniques for preservation of deceased human bodies
    • At least three years working in a biohazardous workplace, including handling of blood borne pathogens, formaldehyde monitoring and storage of hazardous materials
    • Knowledge of California law governing crematories, funeral directors, embalmers, Cal-OSHA, Organ donations, California Business and Professions Code demonstrated knowledge of Funeral Cemetery, and Crematory Codes
    • Demonstrated knowledge of California Health Department regulations on vital statistics and experience filing death certificates and disposition permits
    • Ability to communicate with faculty, medical students, staff, prospective donors and the general public regarding the use of anatomical gifts and anatomical materials
    • Demonstrated computer skills in using database registry
    • Demonstrated theoretical knowledge of human anatomy, biology and physiologyPreferred Qualifications
      • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training is preferred
      • Demonstrated ability to perform dissections and preparations for anatomy study in an efficient and skillful manner
      • Tissue Bank Specialist certificationLicense/Certification
