Job Summary


The Staff Research Associate position is in the Department of Ophthalmology. The purpose of the position is to support research on the discovery and testing of small molecule modulators of ion transporters/channels important in ocular surface diseases, including dry eye disease.

Under direct supervision and training, the SRA I/II will be expected to prepare solutions for experiments, perform non-invasive electrophysiology experiments of the ocular surface in humans and mice, in vitro electrophysiology in cells and tissues (Ussing Chamber), cell culture (maintaining and preparing cell lines for experiments), measurement of ion transport in cells (via fluorescence using plate reader), molecular biology (PCR, animal genotyping, Western blot), staining techniques for tissues and cells (immunofluorescence, light microscopy etc.).

The SRA I/II will assist with animal experiments (handling, anesthesia, injections, colony maintenance, breeding, euthanasia, tissue harvesting, simple surgery), analysis of ions, biomarkers, chemical compounds and metabolites by ion chromatography, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The above-mentioned work will be performed under close supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI) and the candidate will be trained by the PI and other members of the lab.The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. Department Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide. The Department of Ophthalmology is a one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments. We are ranked 1st in National Eye Institute Funding and 2nd in overall National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in the country. Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide with nearly $1.2 million granted in a single year. Overall, the Department has a wide-ranging portfolio of 60 active research grants.

UCSF's renowned eye care services has a new state-of-the-art home. In November 2020, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision opened its doors. Located at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus, the center houses the Vision Clinics, where many of UCSF's eye care programs relocated, as well as research and teaching facilities. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran's Administration Medical Center (VAMC), San Francisco General (SFG), East Bay and Benioff Children's Hospital at Mission Bay and in Oakland. The Department sponsors numerous invited speakers, research seminars, journal clubs, as well as a postdoctoral training program focused on mentorship, networking, and recognition. The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology consists of approximately 300 FTE's (including UCSF Health employees) including faculty, basic scientists, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, residents, fellows, clinical, research and administrative staff.


Required Qualifications

SRA 1:

  • BA/BS degree in related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.SRA II:
    • In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.Note: Classification and salary will depend on the qualifications of the applicant.
      • Careful attention to detail. Maintain a detailed laboratory log of experiments done daily.
      • Ability to work independently and to assess need for interaction with supervising researcher.
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills along with organizational and record keeping skills.


        Preferred Qualifications

        • MS degree
        • At least 1 year of research experience
        • Experience with animal handling
        • Experience with human subject research
