Job Summary


This is a laboratory-based research position focusing on molecular and cellular mechanism of cardiac and neuronal function and signaling, using molecular biology assays, cell culture techniques and microscopy. The successful candidate will get trained and work with the PI in isolating cardiac cells and neurons, preparing retroviral and adenoviral genes and performing cell culture gene transfection/infection/knockdown procedures. Department Description

The primary mission of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, the largest organized research unit on the San Francisco campus, is to promote fundamental and clinical research on the cardiovascular and pulmonary respiratory systems and to provide opportunities for postdoctoral training in these fields. With over 200 faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows, the CVRI supports faculty from a variety of departments (Medicine, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Lab Medicine, Pediatrics, Anatomy, Anesthesia, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Physiology, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology). The total extramural funding is $34 million annually (direct and indirect costs), with $1M in indirect cost return, and $561K in State funds. Assets include $38 million in endowment income and gifts, $3M in clinical reserves, and $5.8M in opportunity funds.



Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Knowledge or experience in basic laboratory skills: Molarity calculations, accurate solution formulation, pH determination, maintenance of accurate notebooks, ability to understand and follow basic laboratory protocols with direct supervision, ability to perform complex tasks without committing errors.
  • Knowledge or experience in molecular biology: Laboratory experience including experience with: PCR, DNA isolation, agarose gel electrophoresis, ligation of DNA, transformation of DNA, mini and maxi-preparation of DNA, Preparation of retroviral and adenoviral genes and Western blotting.
  • Knowledge or experience in microscopy techniques: General understanding of microscopy and familiarity with live-cell imaging techniques.
  • Knowledge or experience in animal care: Familiarity and ability to work with both mice and rat. Specifically, experience with primary cell isolation such as cardiac cells and neurons, husbandry for both mouse and rat.
  • Team player with good communication and interpersonal skills. Willingness to learn and motivated to succeed



    Preferred Qualifications

    Knowledge or experience in molecular biology: PCR, DNA isolation, agarose gel electrophoresis, ligation of DNA, transformation of DNA, mini and maxi-preparation of DNA, Preparation of retroviral and adenoviral genes and Western blotting.
    • Animal care and maintenance: Familiarity with mouse and rat breeding
