The Position We are building the Artificial Intelligence and
Machine Learning Department in Genentech Research and Early
Development (gRED). The successful candidate will develop and apply
novel machine learning methods to impact biological discovery with
the ultimate goal of impacting drug discovery and human health. The
Role You will join the growing department of AI/ML within Research
Biology. Your peers will be machine learning and computational
scientists working across different areas of the life sciences. You
will closely collaborate with chemists, biologists and
computational scientists across departments in gRED. You will
develop machine learning methods for the analysis of graph and
sequence data. You will help build and scale machine learning
techniques to massive datasets and aid in the deployment of novel
machine learning algorithms. You will contribute to and drive
publications in scientific journals and machine learning
conferences, and present results at internal and external
scientific meetings. Desired Qualifications PhD degree in
quantitative field ( e.g. Computer Science, Statistics,
Mathematics) or, in the physical or life sciences (e.g.Chemistry,
Biology) with strong focus on AI methods for drug discovery.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Fluent in Python
and strong experience with analysis of single-cell genomics (e.g.
scRNA-seq and scATAC-seq) datasetsgraph and sequence based data.
Demonstrated experience with modern Python frameworks for deep
learning (e.g. PyTorch or TensorFlow-Keras). Demonstrated interest
in problems across chemistry and biology as applied to the
discovery and development of treatments for disease. Record of
scientific leadership and experience, as evidenced by at least one
high-impact first author publication in a scientific journal, or
equivalent. Additional Desired Qualifications Experience with best
practices in Data Engineering and Machine Learning Ops. Public
portfolio of computational projects (available on e.g. GitHub)
Record of machine learning research excellence as evidenced by
publications in computer science and machine learning conferences
(e.g. NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML). Experience with representation learning
and probabilistic programming (e.g. Pyro). Experience with language
models (e.g. GPT), convolutional neural networks and their
applications to DNA sequences in the context of regulatory
genomics. Interest in modeling evolution of traits (e.g.
Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process), human genetics, genome-wide
association studies (GWAS) and online mendelian inheritance in man

expected salary range for this position based on the primary
location of California is $137,300 - $255,100 and max of hiring
range. Actual pay will be determined based on experience,
qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors
permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available
based on individual and Company performance. This position also
