We have an opening for a Senior Scientist within our Retinal Discovery team to support drug and biomarker discovery in the area of retinal disease. We seek to find creative and motivated scientists who can shape a discovery and development strategy and drive the pipeline for novel drug candidates that address key causes of blindness and vision loss worldwide.

The position is laboratory-based and the qualified scientist is responsible for study planning, execution, troubleshooting, and collaboration at a high degree of autonomy. The scientist will also work closely with our CVMR Biomarker Team in biomarker development in retinal diseases, with a focus on disease biology research and the application of data science technologies to support drug discovery and development. The successful candidate will serve as a Biomarker Program Lead for preclinical or clinical retinal programs in the development and implementation of high caliber translational biomarker packages.

The successful candidate will also be an effective and persuasive communicator, presenting key ideas to internal and external colleagues to enable effective coordination across multiple functions and groups.

Responsibilities
Directly conduct relevant biomarker analyses in the lab, and coordinate biomarker measurements with internal and external supporting groups or CROs
Oversee the design and execution of translational science and biomarker plans integrating both disease and pathway approaches to support portfolio programs
Contribute to the strategies on molecular understanding of human diseases, patient stratification and biomarker-based endpoint translational strategies
Communicate study results and guide stakeholders in applying those results to making strategic decisions
Represent Biomarkers on program discovery and development teams
Identify internal and external collaborations to increase team capabilities or address a strategic need
Design, execute, and troubleshoot molecular and/or cellular assays for patient stratification in clinical trials in the Retinal Disease Area Stronghold (DAS)
Collaborate with key translational, clinical, regulatory, and compound development colleagues to develop and validate assays for use in the clinic
Partner with external assay development/assay providers as needed to support development and execution of assays in support of CVM assets
Support new platform development in Biomarkers
Work closely with other lab-based personnel within the Biomarker Team to ensure optimal laboratory environment (collaboration, culture, safety, etc.)

Qualifications
Ph.D. with 3+ years of relevant experience is required, preferably in pharmaceutical or biotechnology sectors
Proven record of scientific publications is required, and publications in biomarker research in high-quality scientific, technical or medical journals is desired
Experience establishing and implementing biomarker and precision medicine strategies at the project level and in retinal disease area preferred
Ability to work in a cross-functional environment and represent biomarker/precision medicine area in the projects and contribute to decision making preferred
In-depth understanding of the research laboratory environment; familiarity with all basic and some complex laboratory equipment / instrumentation is required
Demonstrated ability to work on assay development in a laboratory setting, and generate and accurately document data is required
Knowledge of retinal cell biology and experience in the culture and evaluation of retinal cell types is preferred
Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills are required.
This position may require 10% travel
