Our IndustryThere are 20 million single family residences (SFRs) in the United States, more than 19 million of which are owned by 15.5 million very small investors, individuals or families who own one or two units. For these rental property owners, there is little in the way of data or technology to help them understand the market rental rates for their property, find and market to the highest quality prospective tenants, and manage the ongoing maintenance of their rental units with minimal headache. Pain points like these are why more than a third of all SFR owners turn to property managers for help.
Full-service property management for SFRs is a hyper-local and highly fragmented business. And just like the owners, property managers have little in the way of data, tools, and automated processes to enable them to scale and work smartly. Further, there is a misalignment of incentives between traditional property managers and the owners they represent managers can promise a high rental rate to win the business, but do so without consequence if they secure a lower rate. They pitch fast leasing timeframes but have no skin in the game when vacancies stretch from weeks to months. Missteps on both of these fronts come at a high cost; they often are the difference between a homeowner making or losing money on their rental property each year.
Our CompanyDoorstead (DRE# 02089344) is here to address these pain points and more which have long been considered unfixable by property owners. Doorstead is a full-service, digitally-driven property management company that puts both the owner and tenant customers at the center of what they do. For owners, the company eliminates uncertainty by guaranteeing market rents and putting a cap on vacancy before they find a tenant. This upfront guarantee gives owners peace of mind while aligning incentives of the owner and manager. We invested early in building local data sets and machine learning models, leveraging tens of attributes for a given home to predict market-clearing rents that minimize vacancy while maximizing owner cash flow.
In less than 2 years of operations, weve booked 8-figure gross rents, indexed rental prices for over 10MM properties, and raised $17M+ from the investors who backed Redfin with participation from executives at Opendoor and Uber. The RoleAs the head of business intelligence at Doorstead, you will be leading a functional unit charged with partnering with our Growth, Operations, Pricing, Finance, and Product organizations to drive our business forward with data. Youll set up measurement strategies to understand the health of our products and operations, identify opportunities and insights, and make data-driven recommendations to scale our business.

The candidate in this role will be managing four core functions:

  • Instrumentation: Ensuring that everything in the organization that should be tracked can be tracked and measured in a systematic way.
  • Visualization: Making information accessible and easy for every team to see the information they need, when they need it.
  • Experimentation: Empowering teams to plan and conduct A/B tests for new features and product iterations.
  • Reflection: Driving data-driven business reviews that allows us to identify whats going well, whats not going well, and opportunities for us to improve.
    Broadly, the candidate will have the ability to envision and take our data-driven culture to the next level. Youll need to collect data from our teams, organize information, build knowledge, and derive insights throughout all of the systems at Doorstead. This will be a highly influential role with direct access to the executive team.
    Practically, the candidate will be responsible for:
    • Own the development, automation, and delivery of analytics for all of Doorsteads products
    • Partner closely with a product manager and an engineering team to define metrics and build reports to track the growth and performance of the product
    • Influence the products direction through written and verbal communication of data-driven recommendations
    • Plan and conduct A/B experiments for new features and product iterations
    • Conduct exploratory analysis to understand changes, user behavior, and long-term trends
    • Ideate, opportunity size, and prioritize upcoming features
    • Work cross-functionally with Growth, Operations, Pricing, Finance, and Product organizations

        To succeed in this role, the candidate will likely need the following qualifications:
        • 5+ years of experience operating as a business intelligence leader
        • Strong academic background with emphasis on finance and mathematical skills
        • Experience using statistical computer languages (SQL, Python, R etc.) to manipulate data and draw insights from large data sets
        • Demonstrated evidence of entrepreneurial skills
        • Demonstrated evidence of being a top performer with previous endeavors
        • Strong problem solving skills
        • Ability to understand and turn business goals into SMART metrics across a business
        • Intuitive understanding of how data can be applied to every step of the business lifecycle
        • A desire to get things done quickly and efficiently
        • Experience managing and growing a team with a strong knowledge of when to delegate vs. do
