Your Team

Reporting to Amy Arentowicz, EVP, General Counsel, the Legal Counsel will be responsible for working with business executives to provide legal guidance on matters related to construction and take-out financing, joint venture partnerships and new business for projects throughout North America. You will also be responsible for negotiating development agreements, easements, CCRs and all legal matters that impact mixed-use development from entitlement to stabilization.

In this role, you will act as an invaluable partner to provide strategic guidance, consultation and support to key leaders of Brookfield Properties Development (Mixed Use and Land & Housing) on a comprehensive range of legal and associated issues involved to carry out the mission of BPD.

Your Key Deliverables

  • Anticipate and identify legal issues and counsel management in order to develop legal strategies and solutions
  • Review contracts, leases, and other legal documents and research legal issues and recommend revisions as necessary
  • Provide legal counsel and guidance to the leadership team of BPD on all legal matters relevant to drafting and negotiating joint venture agreements and related agreements
  • Assist with leasing matters
  • Act as counsel to the company in all matters with respect to the legal services being provided to the Mixed-use development projects requiring legal review and assistance, including real estate law, policies, procedures, rules and regulations, real estate transactions, contract, tax matters, liability and insurance matters, and other laws and regulations
  • Leverage legal resources at affiliate companies to drive development objectives
  • Interface with numerous departments and functions within Brookfield to work effectively and provide a high-level of service to clients and business matters
  • Manage and lead another attorney; communicate company goals, safety practices, and deadlines; provide support to management, including hiring and training, and keep management updated on team performance
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned

Must Haves

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school; bar admission in good standing
  • 7-10 years of transactional experience; combination of private practice and in-house experience preferred
  • Finance background is required; exposure to leasing and construction issues is preferred
  • Critical thinking and strategic problem solving skills
  • Exceptional organizational, writing and communication skills
  • Effectively liaison between internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Proven ability to influence across the organization at multiple levels
  • Ability to prioritize and work well under pressure
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborative and creative
  • Ability to explain complex ideas in a cohesive, clear manner
