We are seeking an exceptional candidate for the position of Internal Service Engineer to join our Service & Support team and work directly with internal Engineering teams. The candidate will be responsible for the management of all Berkeley Lights' platforms (Beacons & Lightnings) in our flagship internal lab, the Berkeley Lights BioFoundry. Responsibilities include: installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, upgrading and repairing of our rapidly evolving life science technology platforms. The candidate should have excellent communication and customer service skills, as well as, experience working with complex lab automation equipment.   • Coordinate and execute platform installation, upgrades, and routine maintenance processes on complex instruments comprised of sophisticated electro-mechanical modules, software, optics, and liquid handling components
  • Optimize uptime of the internal Berkeley Lights' BioFoundry fleet and provide world class customer service to ensure on time delivery of our technology roadmap
  • Manage and track the configuration of all internal Berkeley Lights platforms
  • Develop, test, and document in-house and field service processes and best practices
  • Participate in training of Field Service and Development Engineers on new software and hardware modules, as well as service procedures
  • Participate in engineering design reviews to inform platform serviceability needs


  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in Manufacturing, Quality Engineering, Field Service Engineering or Systems Engineering working with complex electromechanical, optical, and fluidic instrumentation
  • Demonstrated track record of complex electrical, mechanical, and software troubleshooting
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to establish and adopt new processes to drive continuous improvement.
  • Passion for high-quality workmanship and professional standards
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced and dynamic environment

Preferred Experience:

  • Servicing or manufacturing complex biotech instrumentation
  • Navigating through PLM systems such as Arena
  • Documenting and organizing work with CRM/Field Service software tools such as Microsoft D365
  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing Systems Engineering or equivalent training
  • 4 to 8 years military experience with complex electrical, medical, or other technically demanding specialty
