Principal Cancer Epidemiologist, Real-world Data and Cancer Risk Modeling

Company: Freenome
Location: San Francisco
Posted on: April 11, 2021

Job Description:

Principal Cancer Epidemiologist, Real-world Data and Cancer Risk Modeling This Cancer Epidemiologist will lead work on one of Freenome's early cancer detection strategic pillars: using real-world data to support risk model and early detection biomarker development. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the development of statistical risk models for cancer, based on data included in electronic medical records (EMRs), claims databases, and other real-world data sources, in direct support of healthcare system stakeholders' population health management and value-based care objectives. In addition, you will shape the broader real-world data (RWD) and real-world evidence (RWE) strategy for Freenome, informing how real-world clinical data can be applied to support development of Freenome's blood-based molecular assays. Impact for patients is maximized by detecting cancer early, when curative intervention is most achievable. At Freenome, we are taking a holistic approach to detecting cancer at the earliest stages by integrating RWD-based risk modeling, our blood-based multiomic tests, and early intervention strategies.-- In this role, you will have the opportunity to directly manage and lead other epidemiologists, modelers and statisticians focused on the development of cancer risk models and on leveraging real-world-data to improve early detection algorithms. You will work closely with Freenome's machine learning (ML) scientists, computational biologists, and product management, clinical informatics and medical affairs teams. In addition, you will work with major health care provider and payer partners, to access unique and comprehensive cohorts of real-world data. How you'll contribute:

  • Lead the development of statistical risk models for cancer based on real-world claims, EMRs, and other data sources; leverage a comprehensive understanding of clinical risk factors for colorectal and other cancers.
  • Be the in-house expert in the appropriate use of real-world data in modeling and FDA regulated product development. Demonstrate strong command of relevant biostatistics and epidemiology literature in this field.
  • Support the career growth and technical development of talented epidemiologists, modelers and statisticians, while empowering and inspiring them to do their best work.--
  • Identify unmet team needs and further build a team of scientists empowered to leverage real-world data in the context of Freenome's holistic approach to improve patient outcomes.
  • Partner with R&D, Medical Affairs, and Commercial teams to align risk model performance characteristics with those most likely to be impactful for patient healthcare, as well as to align real-world data analysis plans with broader regulatory strategy.
  • Partner with data teams from external payer and provider organizations to develop and implement unique approaches leveraging real-world data for risk assessment and improved patient screening and early cancer detection.
  • Partner with computational biology and ML scientists to maximize the value from integrating clinical and molecular data into downstream algorithms.--
  • Present novel scientific results at conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals (when consistent with Freenome's or external partners' trade secret, intellectual property and product development strategies).
  • Guide strategy and champion the execution of our intellectual property portfolio, publications, external partnerships, and product development plans.
  • Take a mindful, transparent, and humane approach to your work. What you'll bring:--
    • PhD or equivalent research experience in a relevant quantitative field such as statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, medicine or cancer molecular biology (with a record of demonstrated achievement in a relevant application domain)
    • 6+ years of post-PhD experience in academia or industry in this area, ideally with a significant emphasis on the design and execution of real-world data studies.
    • Expertise in successful application of biostatistical, epidemiological or ML techniques to practical problems in human health, demonstrated by research publications or industry achievements.
    • Extensive experience working with EMR and/or claims data, with an understanding of the unique nuances of real-world datasets.--
    • Solid knowledge in biological or medical research in oncology, specifically in cancer biology, therapeutic approaches, and/or epidemiology.--
    • Outstanding proficiency in the implementation of complex statistical models in a general-purpose programming language such as R or Python.
    • Excellent ability to communicate to technical peers and also across disciplines, and to work collaboratively on interdisciplinary teams.
    • An entrepreneurial mindset, a passion for innovation, demonstrated initiative in tackling new areas of research, and an ability to carry great ideas forward to practical and impactful implementation. We have pioneered the most comprehensive multiomics platform for early cancer detection through a routine blood draw. By combining deep expertise in molecular biology with advanced computational biology and machine learning techniques to recognize disease-associated patterns among billions of circulating, cell-free biomarkers, we are developing simple and accurate blood tests for early cancer detection and integrating the actionable insights into health systems to operationalize a machine learning feedback loop between care and science.-- Our recent $270 Million Series C brings our financing to over $500 million from investors, including; Bain Capital, Perceptive Advisors, RA Capital, Polaris Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., GV (formerly Google Ventures), Roche Venture Fund, Kaiser Permanente Ventures, American Cancer Society's BrightEdge Ventures, Data Collective Venture Capital, Novartis and Verily Life Sciences.-- Our Science Freenome is building technology to advance the understanding of cancer through multiple analytes derived from blood. These signals include cell-free DNA, methylation of cell-free DNA, cell-free RNA, circulating proteins, and immune profiling derived from thousands of prospective samples. By developing novel statistical learning methods and applying them to integrate various -omics datasets, Freenome is a leader in modeling specific biological mechanisms to capture disease-dependent signatures, including gene expression, immune response, tumor burden, the tissue of origin, and 3D chromatin structure.-- By building comprehensive discovery datasets and modeling critical biological systems, Freenome is learning what biological changes are present within the blood between a variety of different disease states, including cancer, autoimmune disorders, infections, drug response, and aging. The synthesis of Freenome's datasets, cross-functional technical expertise, and audacious mission to discover biological truth, we seek to improve the lives of millions through early detection and early treatment of disease.
