We have multiple openings for staff scientist to perform research, development, and application activities in support of Laboratory missions. You will support research & development activities in material aging and compatibility studies under the supervision of experienced scientists and will assist in performance testing of explosive articles. These positions are in the Reaction Dynamics Group of the Materials Science Division.These positions will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.Essential Duties- Conduct research and contribute to the development of advanced mechanical, thermal, optical, laser, electronic and/or explosive systems for various applications.- Collaborate with other team members in the design, implementation, and qualification of cutting edge R&D systems.- Work closely with scientists, engineers, technicians, and integration experts from LLNL and its sponsors in all aspects of system development.- Contribute to project/program milestone completion and provide solutions to problems of limited complexity using standard techniques and methodologies.- Obtain certification as a qualified explosives handler.- Work with energetic materials.- Perform other duties as assigned.In Addition at the SES.2 Level- Document development activities, write reports, and deliver reports and project briefings.- Define and prioritize tasks and goals to ensure project needs are addressed in a timely and efficient manner.- Work independently and with teams to solve moderately complex to complex problems in the areas of engineering hardware design, chemical analysis, spectroscopy and testing that require analysis and creative use of established techniques and methods.Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics or related physical science field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.- Fundamental knowledge in one or more of the following: engineering hardware design, chemical analysis, spectroscopic techniques, material testing methods.- Ability to obtain and maintain certification as a qualified explosives handler.- Ability to work in a collaborative research and development environment.- Experience analyzing and interpreting fundamental experimental results and report findings.- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills, organizational and interpersonal skills necessary to work with experimental teams which may include members from all disciplines and working effectively under conflicting and rigorous deadlines.In Addition at the SES.2 Level- Ability to perform independent work with technical objectives and ability to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.- Comprehensive knowledge of engineering hardware design, chemical analysis, spectroscopic techniques, and testing processes.- Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information to internal and external audiences.Desired Qualifications- Experience working in an environment with stringent safety and security policies.- Working knowledge of and/or experience with material aging and compatibility.- Experience with programming in Java, Python or Matlab. Pre-Placement Medical Exam:-- A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required. Pre-Employment Drug Test:-- External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.-- This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor. Security Clearance:-- This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, we--will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you--meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.-- Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.-- If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
