UNITE HERE! Local 2 is one of the most progressive and innovative local unions in the nation. Local 2 represents 14,000 hotel and food service workers in San Francisco and San Mateo Counties, including approximately 90% of the workers in major hotels in San Francisco as well as food service workers throughout the City. UNITE HERE Local 2 is seeking to hire an experienced External Organizer to develop leadership among rank and file members, organize new workers into the union, and build a strong union based on membership involvement and participation. Local 2 is affiliated with the UNITE HERE!, a progressive labor union that fights for dignity, living wages and affordable health care for low wage workers. Local 2 works closely with other UNITE HERE! locals in Northern California and throughout North America. ( ***************** ) Job Responsibilities: Identify, recruit, train and develop worker-leaders through one-on-one communication Train workers to organize their coworkers Build and maintain worker committees Organize and lead worker committee meetings Help to organize and run large actions such as picket lines and civil disobedience Perform administrative tasks necessary for worker organizing (such as maintaining databases, producing materials and correspondence) Job Requirements/Qualifications: Experience as an organizer and/or union representative preferred Willing to work long, irregular hours (including weekends), as needed Willing and able to travel as needed Commitment to rank and file leadership development Ability to work with minimal supervision Ability to work with a diverse, multi-cultural membership Ability to speak Cantonese and/or Spanish preferred Must have a car and a driver s license.
