Job Description

Block is looking for an outstanding patent paralegal who has a creative legal mind, a willingness to get deep in the weeds, and a sense of adventure. You will provide operational and substantive support to our small but mighty patent legal team. You will report into our Patent Lead.

You will:

  • Support the transition between docket management systems, including creating guidelines for data migration, docket management configuration and data validation
  • Perform global patent docketing and docket management
  • Perform global annuity program management
  • Support the ongoing development of patent preparation and prosecution best practices and procedures
  • Coordinate with patent portfolio managers, outside counsel and inventors in preparing patent applications
  • Monitor law firm expenses and reporting against patent budgets
  • Provide procedural guidance to law firms and managing guideline documentation
  • Manage international filing decision programs
  • Manage global inventor-incentive award and recognition programs
  • Take ownership of assignments related to the IP process, managing timelines, and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Perform global IP litigation docketing and docket management
  • Create initial drafts of IP litigation strategy documents, including patent claim charts
  • Perform patent searches to help advise on the patentability of new ideas Qualifications

    You have:
    • At least 5+ years of patent paralegal experience
    • A B.A./B.S. degree or equivalent practical experience
    • An understanding of patent docketing and annuity practices in jurisdictions where Block operates (in particular, the United States and Europe)
    • A familiarity with worldwide patent prosecution and portfolio management strategies
    • Experience with Foundation IP, Symphony, and CPA Global a plus
    • Experience with patent docket management platforms, annuity platforms, and office productivity software (in particular, G Suite tools)
    • A familiarity with worldwide patent and trademark litigation before United States District Courts, United States Courts of Appeal, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, particularly the Patent Trial and Appeal Board and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board
    • Significant experience with PACER, PTAB E2E, and Docket Navigator

      Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

      Zone A: USD $125,600 - USD $153,600
      Zone B: USD $116,800 - USD $142,800
      Zone C: USD $110,500 - USD $135,100
      Zone D: USD $100,500 - USD $122,900
