Lab Assistant II (On-Site Only)
TheSchool of Humanities and Sciences (H&S)is the foundation of

Department Description: The Biology department is the center of
life science research at Stanford. Our mission is to lead in
understanding life, from molecules to cells, and organisms to

Position Summary: The Department of Biology is seeking to fill a
9-month academic appointment at the Lab Assistant II level to
provide high quality lab support for the undergraduate biology lab
courses offered by Stanford University. The Lab Assistant will be
part of an energetic team dedicated to bringing a diverse and
comprehensive laboratory experience to the students. The
laboratories are located both on Stanford Campus and at field
sites, either on or off campus.
This is a 75% FTE, 9 month (September - June) continuing academic
appointment, bargaining unit, position. This position will be based
on the Stanford campus.

CORE DUTIES:
- Make complex media, reagents buffers, or animal diets/therapies
etc., requiring a series of laboratory operations, carrying out the
series without intermediate instructions.
- Maintain quality of prepared items and resolve basic problems
(e.g., media,reagents, buffers).
- Calculate and plot graphs from data.
- Count bacterial plates following well-established guidelines.
- Attach electrodes previously installed in animals to recording
equipment, electrical stimulators, etc., and collect data from the
equipment.
- Observe, and record signs of unusual appearance, behavior,
illness or death in animals; complete and maintain forms as
required.
- May determine sex and wean animals according to established
procedures.
- Maintain stock control and inventory of aboratory supplies and
equipment, including keeping records, reordering, tracking down
missing items, etc. Maintain records of all products made.
- Perform routine equipment servicing, either performing the work
or contacting appropriate outside contractor; keep service
records
- May give brief orientation concerning location and operation of
equipment in the laboratory.
- May train and coordinate the work of lower-level employees
- May perform any of the duties described in the Laboratory
Assistant I specification or other duties as assigned.
- Adhere to safety rules.
- Clean and set-up laboratory classrooms and student supplies
- Prepare and dispense media, reagents, buffers
- Expand and identify the stages/sex of Caenorhabditis elegans and
fungi
- Grow and make cell pellets of Saccharomyces cerevisiae
(yeast)
- Count colonies on bacterial plates
- Wash, organize and sterilize glassware and labware
- Set-up field experiments for ecology courses
- Maintain stock control and inventory of laboratory supplies and
equipment, including keeping records, reordering, tracking down
missing items, etc.
- Maintain records of all reagents made.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
This position requires a minimum of one year of Laboratory
Assistant I level or a combination of education and relevant
experience.
- In addition to the qualifications listed for the Laboratory
Glassware Washer, these employees must have demonstrated initiative
and good judgment.
- Ability to perform work with a minimum of error under general
supervision.
- Ability to train others in aspects of Lab Assistant work.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- In addition to the qualifications listed for the Laboratory
Glassware Washer, the Lab Asst. II must have demonstrated
initiative and good judgment.
- Ability to perform work with a minimum of error under general
supervision.
- Ability to train others in aspects of Lab Assistant work.
- Manual dexterity to perform assigned tasks
- Write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, perform desk based
computer tasks.
- Frequently stand/walk, perform seated work, operate special
machines
- Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach /work above shoulders,
light fine grasping.
- Lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
- Rarely help move heavier items (e.g. chairs or lab equipment;
packages of supplies; drums containing 2 to 15 gallons, depending
on ability.
In addition, preferred requirements include:
- Experience supporting a teaching laboratory
- An individual who is organized and able to plan and execute
multiple ongoing tasks, yet with attention to detail and quality
control.
- Must be a responsible and collaborative team member with a "can
do" and positive attitude.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on
research, Lab Assistants may work in the vicinity of animals,
chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all
safety requirements and procedures, including wearing appropriate
Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) if required.
The expected pay range for this position is $29.32 (Step 1) to
$35.41 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to
the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
This position is represented by SEIU Local 2007 and the collective
bargaining agreement between the university and SEIU Local 2007
governs the terms and conditions of employment.
