Position Overview:
To provide direct patient care utilizing the nursing process; oversees clinical issues related to the integumentary, gastrointestinal, and genitor-urinary systems. The wound, Ostomy, continence (WOC) nurse serves as a clinical expert and consultant, educator, researcher, and leader. WOC nursing is an evidence-based specialty practice incorporating a unique body of knowledge to provide excellence in prevention, health maintenance, and therapeutic intervention within scope of practice encompassing care of all patient populations across the continuum of care. As a member of the multi-disciplinary healthcare team, the WOC nurse guides optimal patient care to improve the quality of life for individuals with wound, Ostomy, and continence concerns and achieves positive clinical outcomes.

Education/Certification and Licensure:
Registered Nurse in the State of California required.
Bachelors of Science in Nursing

Board certification by the WOCNCB in wound (mandatory) and Ostomy (recommended).
Certification in BLS

Basic knowledge of nursing quality and evidence-based practice literature. Knowledge relating to health care delivery, project management, triage, assessment, delegation, advocacy, and quality improvement is preferred. The following skills are necessary for success in this role:
Familiar with utilizing the nursing process, including assessment, planning and implementation of care; instructs personnel in the care of patients with ostomies, draining wounds, complex fistulas, pressure ulcers, acute and chronic wounds, and continence disorders.
Experience in the use of negative pressure wound therapy
Experience with protocol development
Familiar with quality improvement principles
Expert clinical nursing skills
Excellent organizational and writing skills
Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of departments and individuals at all levels within the organization
Able to function independently and effectively in a dynamic environment and be able to meet timelines
Creative, self-motivated, and able to plan and initiate needed activities
Experience in clinical education program development and presentations
Willingness to engage in clinical research
Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office and computer data entry.
