Vice President, Global Product Development Oncology (Breast and Gynecologic Cancers) Genentech/Roche is seeking a Vice President, Clinical Science Oncology with clinical and drug--development experience to lead the Breast and Gynecologic Cancer Global Franchise within our Product Development/ Oncology organization. This individual will be responsible for leadership, strategy development and management of the Breast and Gynecologic Cancer Global Franchise. The position will have significant accountability for setting strategy across these programs, including development innovation. The position will involve clinical development of new molecular entities, new combinations and new indications for products targeting breast and gynecologic cancers. Further, this position serves as a key collaborator for research, early development, Roche partnering and the commercial organization as well as external interactions in Breast and Gynecologic Cancers. In addition to managing a large global clinical development team, the Global Head of Breast and Gynecologic Cancer will be responsible for oversight of the design, implementation, monitoring, analysis, and reporting of studies conducted for all breast and gynecologic cancer programs. Context and Key Responsibilities: This is a global role reporting to the Senior Vice President, Global Head of Clinical Science Oncology. The position includes membership in the Product Development/Oncology Leadership Team (PDO LT) and cross-functional Joint Oncology Leadership Team (JOLT). In addition, as co-chair of the Breast Disease Area Team (BDAT), the position is responsible for the overarching strategy in breast cancer. The position Integrates plans and partners with other disease area franchises, and ensures the excellence and scientific rigor of clinical development plans through management of the global development leaders (GDLs) who lead their respective Development Working Groups. There is joint accountability with the Global Product Strategy (GPS) partner to deliver late stage oncology clinical development plans enabling regulatory submissions and approvals. The Franchise leader is a recognized disease area expert with credibility to interface with key external regulatory and healthcare organizations and stakeholders (i.e. FDA, EMA, other Regulatory bodies, Payer organizations, Advisory Committees, Therapeutic Area Experts, media, analysts, etc.). Key responsibilities include:--Represents Oncology late development within Roche and Genentech as a member of the Oncology Leadership Team and through interactions with the Product Development functional leaders as well as Research, Early Development, Commercial, and Roche Partnering senior leaders. Contributes to the Late Stage Portfolio Committee (LSPC) through integration of breast and gynecologic cancers to the Oncology Therapeutic Area Strategy. Leads the strategic clinical oversight of the Breast and Gynecologic Cancer late stage development portfolio with significant accountability for setting global strategy across these programs, including decision-making and budget accountability for some programs. Ensures consistent and effective communication across all sites. Accountable for building global working capability and establishing clear success metrics. Coaches, manages and supports employees to achieve business goals. Actively manages talent, career development, training and capabilities/skill assessment. Maintains and develops a positive organizational culture, by promoting the values of the focus on patients, science, and people. Prepares and manages resource and capacity, utilizing resources in the most efficient way. Determines and manages expenditures and budget within the Breast and Gynecologic Cancer late stage global franchise. Key Accountabilities:

  • Overall accountability for global Breast and Gynecologic Cancer late stage development franchise
  • Decision-making and budget accountabilities for some programs with the Breast and Gynecologic Cancer franchise
  • Co-leads the Breast Disease Area Team (BDAT)
  • Represents Oncology late development within Roche and GNE, as a member of the PDO LT and JOLT, as well as through interactions with PD functional, Research, Early Development, Commercial, Regulatory and Roche Partnering senior leaders
  • Closely interfaces with pRED, gRED and Roche Partnering to provide disease and pivotal development expertise in defining new development opportunities, exploring new areas of discovery, and potential acquisitions or external partnerships
  • Evaluates new molecular entities and approved medicines in the late stage portfolio for new indication opportunities
  • Accountable for building global working capability and establishing clear success metrics
  • Recognized disease expert with credibility to interface with key external health organizations (i.e. FDA, Advisory Committees, Key Opinion Leaders, reporters, analysts, WHO etc.)
  • Coaches, manages and supports employees to achieve business goals. Actively manages talent and career development
  • Mentors and coaches current and potential GDLs and DLs
  • Maintains and develops a positive organizational culture, by promoting the values of the focus on patients, science, and our people Critical Experiences and Qualifications: Candidates should have an M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. with board certification/eligibility in Oncology and/or Hematology; expertise in clinical drug development is required. A minimum of 10 years drug development experience in a large biotech, pharmaceutical or clinical organization. Clinical practice expertise in oncology. Experience in breast/gynecologic cancers is required. Scientific experience in molecular oncology and/or hematology is preferred. Significant preclinical/scientific research experience and publication record. Proven experience interacting with senior and executive leadership. Proven experience at filing products with global regulatory authorities (IND, BLA, and NDA). Required to travel internationally. Technical/Functional Skill & Knowledge Areas:
    • Acts effectively as a delegate for the Senior Vice President or as a representative to other groups inside and outside of Roche/GNE for the relevant therapeutic area(s).
    • Demonstrated clinical trial experience (with significant clinical trial experience in the biotech or pharmaceutical industry).
    • Expert knowledge of Oncology drug development.
    • Recognized as a subject matter expert within the field of Oncology and Breast or Gynecologic Oncology by both internal and external experts.
    • Experience in lab-based research a plus
    • Strong publication record a plus
    • Strong understanding of molecular drivers of cancer, diagnostic methods, as well as cancer immunology or immunotherapy required.
    • Experience leading and managing a large global scientific and medical group (comprised of direct and indirect reports) for complex high profile molecules and/or programs.
    • Proven strategic thinking and sound judgment.
    • Working knowledge of international regulatory environment; direct experience with national or international regulators a plus.
    • Prepared to make decisions and take calculated risks, able to synthesize detailed information and make sound decisions based on risk assessment and balancing of priorities.
    • Ability to critically evaluate scientific data with a working knowledge of the Product Development long-range plan and experience with cross-functional departments.
    • Fluent in both verbal and written English
    • Excellent presentation skills, verbal and in writing.
    • Networked with academic thought leaders in Breast and Gynecologic Cancers
    • Demonstrated track record in leading and managing change on a large scale.
