Department Description The Hematology Blood and Marrow Transplant service line includes Malignant Hematology, Non-Malignant Hematology, Blood and Marrow Transplant, and Cancer Immunotherapy Programs. Advance Practice Providers provide direct care to patients receiving both standard of care and research protocols in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Job Summary This supervisor role manages nursing and administrative operations of a team of Advanced Practice Providers (APP) within the Hematology, Blood and Marrow Transplant service line. APP's may include nurse practitioners and physician's assistants. Maintains 24 hour line management, responsibility for the administration of fiscal, material, and human resources. S/he will direct supervision typically to professionals or skilled technical employees. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies (e.g., fiscal management, HR, contracts and grants, resource management in defined areas) and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources (operational, financial, and human) in compliance with departmental goals and objectives. UCSF Medical Center requires all Advanced Practice Providers (APP) to be credentialed through its Office of Medical Affairs & Governances (OMAG) in order to practice and function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Medical Center sites (Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Satellite Clinics, et al). Credentialing and approval of the Standardized Procedures takes between 60-90 days and must be completed prior to the first working day. Required Qualifications Four (4) years NP experience Active Nurse Practitioner licensure in the State of California Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California Active American Heart Association CPR Certification Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) License NP Furnishing Certificate in the State of California Current National Board Certification Master's Degree in Nursing Completion of a Masters level Nurse Practitioner Program Demonstrated use of advanced personnel management strategies, with the ability to train, monitor, evaluate, document and remedy staff issues and performance; ability to navigate bargaining unit contracts to guide management of personnel issues Demonstrated ability in advanced written and verbal communications skills; ability to train and mentor subordinates, provide constructive feedback, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear, concise and professional manner Demonstrated ability to perform independently as an AHP in an acute care, academic teaching and/or hematology practice; ability to gather clinical information, develop differential diagnoses, and create problem lists independently. Competent to direct patient management and lead a care team Solid knowledge of the clinical and operational issues for nurse practitioners performing advanced-practice nursing within departments and specialty areas, including evaluation, testing, diagnosis, and treatment, as well as patient-care concepts, policies Solid written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner, and to prepare and present a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations with all levels of clinical staff and management, consultants, researchers, and outside agencies Excellent leadership, fiscal, and operational management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians, management, and staff from all disciplines; ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration, and consistent achievement of objectives The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of clinical and administrative software and specialized applications and data management systems used by nurse practitioners in providing advanced-practice nursing care, research, documentation, and employee supervision Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise a team and to manage the complex workflow and competing priorities involved with providing quality care as a nurse practitioner Demonstrated ability to understand and communicate an advanced knowledge of national, state, and local educational and legislative issues and regulatory requirements affecting nurse practitioners. Exhibits tact and professionalism in difficult situations according to PRIDE Values and Practices Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information. Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to safety and infection control policies and procedures. Assumes accountability for improving quality metrics associated with department/unit and meeting organizational/departmental targets. Work Environment Keeps working areas neat, orderly and clutter-free, including the hallways. Adheres to cleaning processes and puts things back where they belong. Removes and reports broken equipment and furniture. Picks up and disposes of any litter found throughout entire facility. Posts flyers and posters in designated areas only; does not post on walls, doors or windows. Knows where the Environment of Care Manual is kept in department; corrects or reports unsafe conditions to the appropriate departments. Protects the physical environment and equipment from damage and theft. The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.
