Sr. Director, University IT Project Management Office Stanford University Job Number: 82807 Job Description Sr. Director, University IT Project Management Office (PMO) Position Summary Reporting to the AVP for Service Strategy in University IT, the Sr. Director of the UIT Project Management Office (PMO) provides both strategic leadership and operational management, ensuring the PMO's success. Through the leadership of project managers and/or managerial staff, the Sr. Director ensures that the proper mix of technical and other resources are assembled into multi-discipline teams in order to complete a broad range of technology projects, whose completion is, in turn, critical to the entire University. The Sr. Director makes strategic decisions regarding project budgets, resources, and timelines, and leverages project management best practices to drive continuous improvement and ensure consistently high-quality outcomes. The Sr. Director weighs the interests of multiple stakeholders, acts with the highest professionalism, and exercises independent judgment and decision-making. The Sr. Director is a member of UIT's Senior Management Team and is involved in setting strategy for the organization and, particularly involved in selecting the projects to be completed to align to that strategy. Core Duties Responsible for ongoing and long-term viability and success of the PMO. Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the PMO Develop and implement organization and funding plans Evaluate the productivity of the organizational structure to ensure success; design and implement re-structuring plans, as necessary. Oversee allocation of all resources Lead and manage PMO staff; accountable for the performance of all staff Provide a clear vision and sense of mission for the organization Build a competent and diverse project management team and workforce Recruit, lead, and mentor/coach key staff through motivation and education Own University IT's project portfolio Lead project portfolio governance process, prioritizing projects based on set criteria Regularly report on status of the project portfolio Regularly conduct reviews of progress toward completion of projects in the portfolio Facilitate dependency management across the portfolio Recommend go/no-go decisions for production releases based on established standard methodologies Provide leadership to ensure proper investments in tools, processes and people to govern project portfolio, risk reviews, document controls and project management training Identify and resolve strategic issues of substantial significance that affect University IT broadly, consulting and advising senior leadership, as necessary. Advise senior management on programmatic and policy development. May provide input to university leadership on institutional administrative policies and guidelines. Understand business goals of Stanford's diverse stakeholder population, how those goals are aligned with longer term strategies, and when called on, participate in the development of technology solutions; work effectively with campus partners in the development of project charters, requirements and solution delivery Other duties may also be assigned Minimum Requirements Education & Experience At least ten years of relevant experience Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, business or other related field, or equivalent experience Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Leadership, supervisory, planning and change management skills Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to influence people, tackle problems, trouble shoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts. Ability to establish relationships and motivate cross-functional teams with ability to achieve results in a consensus driven environment Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills Deep and broad experience in project management for a wide variety of technologies including enterprise-wide business systems, communications systems, and infrastructure. Familiarity with custom development, data warehousing, business intelligence, and security/privacy tools. Significant experience in budget planning, and financial forecasting. Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements. In-depth understanding of various project methodologies (waterfall, iterative, agile), their strengths and weaknesses and how/when to adapt them to project needs Understanding of project management tools, budget planning tools, resource allocation tools, agile tools, and issue/bug tracking tools. Experience leading large, complex projects or programs. Certifications and Licenses Project Management Professional (PMP) certified, completion of a Project Management Certificate program, or certification in process. Physical Requirements Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. Frequently sitting. Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds; Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
