Job Description:
Berkeley Lab's Projects & Infrastructure Modernization Division
is hiring a Project Manager. This position will manage, coordinate,
and administer complex projects from the conceptual phase through
close-out. The role involves simultaneously managing multiple
projects with competing priorities, coordinating and preparing
project schedules and budgets, developing, preparing, and
implementing project plans, and meeting project cost, schedule, and
safety goals.
Project Manager (Level 1) Responsibilities:
- Manage complex projects of moderate size within a project team
that includes Construction Managers, Project Coordinators, lab
staff, and subcontractors. Incorporate Environment, Health, &
Safety, and Quality input to ensure project completion safely, on
budget, on schedule, and meeting specifications.
- Coordinate project activities with Environment, Health, and
Safety input and oversight. Represent the Laboratory on project
matters with external organizations like Department of Energy
(DOE)/Berkeley Site Office and the University of California.
Maintain client relationships through regular correspondence and
interactions.
- Prepare and coordinate project scope, procedures, budget, and
schedule. Manage contractual commitments and project reviews to
ensure compliance with specifications and subcontract terms.
Approve project forecasts, schedules, cost estimates, and financial
reports and manage the project budget.
- Proactively identify and address customer needs related to
project management services. Ensure customer satisfaction with
relevant solutions. Attend management planning and review meetings
as needed. Ensure prompt project close-out and submission of final
reports. In addition to the above, Project Manager (Level 2)
Responsibilities:
- Manage moderately complex and large-scale projects by leading a
team of Construction Managers, Project Coordinators, Facilities
staff, and subcontractors, incorporating Environment, Health, &
Safety, and Quality input to ensure safe project completion within
budget, schedule, and specifications.
- Determine project requirements, scope, procedures, budget, and
schedule. Manage contractual commitments and project reviews to
ensure compliance with specifications and subcontract terms. Review
and approve project forecasts, schedules, cost estimates, and
financial reports, and prepare project budgets.
- Develop project plans and implement them, monitoring
performance to meet stakeholder requirements. Work with limited
supervision, making decisions that may impact the division.
- Collaborate with other project managers to set plans and
objectives for the Projects and Infrastructure Management Division.
Attend management planning meetings as needed. What is
Required:
Project Manager Level 1:
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related
field, or equivalent experience, with a minimum of 2+ years in
construction project management, including planning, scheduling,
and budgeting. Experience with computerized project-tracking
databases.
- Familiar with Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and
DOE Orders for project management, including Earned Value
Management System (EVMS) concepts.
- Experience leading diverse teams, including contractors and
subcontractors, providing performance expectations, guidance, and
training. Ability to delegate assignments.
- Experience in budget and schedule management, developing
project scope documents, and coordinating project delivery.
- Strong planning, prioritization, organizational, and time
management skills, with the ability to manage multiple
projects.
- Experience in proposal development, presentation, and client
relations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, excellent
collaboration, and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focused
approach. In addition to the above, Project Manager Level 2:
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related
field, or equivalent experience, with a minimum of 5+ years in
construction facilities project management, including planning,
scheduling, and budgeting. Experience with computerized
project-tracking databases.
- Experience leading diverse teams, including contractors and
subcontractors, providing performance expectations, guidance, and
training. Ability to delegate assignments.
- Proven experience in budget and schedule management, developing
project scope documents, and coordinating project delivery,
including team assignments and technical quality.
- Experience with industry-recognized project management software
and certified EVMS techniques.
- Strong planning, prioritization, organizational, and time
management skills, with the ability to manage multiple
projects.
- Excellent proposal development, presentation, and client
relationship skills. Desired Qualifications:
- Valid professional license obtained by written examination to
practice Architecture/Engineering in the State of California.
- MS Project, Primavera, and/or other project management system
experience.
- Project Management Certification (PMI). Notes:
This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from
overtime pay.
- The Project Manager Level 1 position is expected to pay
$122,000 - $136,000 annually, which fits within the full salary
range of $108,384 - $182,940 annually for the job classification of
Z20.1.
- The Project Manager Level 2 position is expected to pay
$144,000 - $177,000 annually, which fits within the full salary
range of $128,412- $216,672 annually for the job classification of
Z20.2.
- Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final
candidate's qualifications and experience, including skills,
knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned
with the internal peer group.
- It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at
or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are
determined based on the final candidate's qualifications and
experience.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any

- This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (2.5 days/
week onsite) - a combination of teleworking and performing work on
site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley,
CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals
working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley
Lab.
