Job Function Research and Development The director of the Molecular
Transfusion Core (MTC) is an outstanding and detail-oriented
molecular biologist, with experience in real-time PCR assay
development/optimization and next-generation sequencing, who leads
and manages the work of this mission-essential core laboratory at
Vitalant Research Institute (VRI). The MTC laboratory specializes
in design and performance of molecular assays for nucleic acid
detection and quantification to assist VRI scientists and
collaborators in a variety of research studies. The director
supervises and mentors a team of 3 to 5 research staff, is
responsible for oversight of daily operations, and is the leader of
innovation within the core. The MTC director works with VRI
investigators, other core lab leaders, and research administration
to prepare research proposals, develop collaborations, lead
authorship on abstracts and journal manuscripts, and present
research findings. The director reports to the Vice President for
Research and Scientific Programs at Vitalant. More about the MTC:
To facilitate the use and tailoring of molecular methodologies by
VRI scientists and collaborators, the MTC centralizes the process
of DNA and RNA extraction and quantification, primer and probe
design, nucleic acid amplification, nucleic acid sequencing, and
data analysis, particularly for large multicenter research studies.
Molecular assays for the specific detection, quantification and
sequencing of nucleic acids are critical tools for infectious
disease screening, discrimination of genetic variants,
characterization of infection reservoirs, and immune cell
profiling. Real-time PCR assays specific for
transfusion-transmitted viruses and parasites are used in studies
that aim to define prevalence and duration of infection in blood
donors and transfusion recipients. Allele-specific PCR assays allow
for the detection of donor genetic material within recipient cells
as a result of infusion or transplantation, and sequencing of viral
and parasite DNA/RNA is employed in molecular surveillance of
infected donors. The MTC currently has one Hologic transcription
mediated amplification (TMA) Panther--- platform, and one Grifols
TMA Panther--- platform. In current projects, both instruments are
used for detection and/or quantification of HIV, HCV, HBV, WNV,
DENV, ZIKV, babesia, malaria and other agents of concern for blood
safety. Developing and expanding VRI's capacity in single cell
sequencing is a current priority, and the MTC director will have
access to the 10X Genomics Chromium iX, Bio-Rad ddSEQ, and Mission
Bio Tapestri instruments at VRI to implement single-cell RNA-seq,
ATAC-seq, DNA-seq and multi-omics protocols. Core Duties and
Responsibilities: Independently manage and oversee operations of
the MTC while integrating with the other Vitalant Research
Institute Cores. Develop quotes for core services offered by the
MTC in collaboration with Vitalant Research Institute
administrative staff. Make decisions regarding lab equipment
maintenance, service plans, upgrades and purchases. Plan, monitor
and evaluate timelines for multiple simultaneous projects and
studies, and manage prioritization of schedules and resources.
Prepare technical progress reports and evaluate budget status for
grants and contracts. Contribute to writing and budget preparation
for grant proposals, including generating preliminary data.
Interface with investigators to understand project needs and
customize core services. Supervise and support research staff,
including assisting with troubleshooting, directing work on
projects, performance management, and hiring. Research Duties and
Responsibilites: Design experimental approaches for research
projects utilizing nucleic acid amplification testing and
sequencing; develop and validate new protocols. Provide technical
expertise in nucleic acid extraction and quality control,
quantitative real-time PCR, nucleic acid target-capture,
transcription-mediated amplification, and next-generation
sequencing. Analyze and interpret data; prepare, document and
present detailed methods; generate figures and describe results.
Lead the development and writing of manuscripts and present ongoing
work at meetings and conferences. Ongoing review of literature to
maintain current knowledge related to specific studies and
techniques. Actively participate in meetings with collaborators to
discuss research progress and data interpretation; identify new
research directions and synergies Education and Experience: Ph.D.
and postdoctoral training in molecular biology, cell biology,
virology, microbiology or a related scientific field. Lab
management and supervisory experience are preferred. Demonstrated
experience with molecular assay design and performance. Experience
with large, multicenter research studies preferred.
Skills/Abilities Well-developed research skills and knowledge in
specific field, clinical and/or research procedures and techniques.
Ability to prioritize and execute multiple tasks and meet
deadlines. - Must possess exceptional oral and written
communication, and interpersonal skills. - Strong detail
orientation, analytical ability and organization skills. - Able to
understand, follow, and give precise written and verbal directions
and procedures, and perform all activities safely and accurately.
Solid computer skills to include statistical analysis. Ability to
interpret and explain the theoretical basis of work performed.
Ability to apply understanding of scientific theory to the
structure and execution of research experiments. Able to perform
work duties with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality when working
with research study participants. - Able and willing to work with
hazardous material, which may include biohazards, radioisotopes,
and chemicals, in compliance with health and safety guidelines and
regulations. - Function independently and as a harmonious member of
a team. Salary range from $125,000-$145,000.00 per annum
