Remote US Based$196,000-$255,000INTRODUCTION TO PAIPartnership on AI (PAI), the leading multi-stakeholder organization addressing the most important and difficult directions and decisions on the future of AI, has charted a new course to reposition itself in the minds of the public, its Partners, and prospective funders; increase philanthropic dollars raised; and more fully embrace its identity as an independent, international nonprofit organization.The case for support is evident. With the jump in capabilities of AI technologies over the last decade, AI systems are being harnessed in numerous ways with wide-scale influences, extending to economics, healthcare, politics, and justice systems. Enthusiasm about AI is balanced by growing concerns about when and how the technology is used. PAI was created as an independent platform that brings together tech companies, civil society organizations, and teams from academia to collaborate meaningfully about the responsible development and fielding of AI technologies.Since its founding in 2016, PAI has convened diverse voices that span AI scientists and experts in privacy and public policy to leaders in civil liberties, human rights, and economics. Their collective efforts have led to shared wins in standing up collaborative projects, and produced novel directions forward for AI, including guidance on identifying and mitigating potential harms and on promoting an equitable and just future. PAI's international community of Partners has grown to include nearly 100 organizations and comprises an ecosystem that encourages information sharing and the development and adoption of best practices. No other organization working on the social implications of AI exists with such a diverse community.As the global AI landscape continues to rapidly evolve, there is a growing need for PAI's unique role as a convener, consensus builder, and independent voice on the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies. To meet that need, PAI will redesign its philanthropy and partnerships program, expanding the advancement operation in a way that optimizes the organization's historical success with corporations and foundations, strategically includes individual giving, and ensures the long-term sustainability of PAI.POSITION OVERVIEWChief Strategy Officer, Philanthropy & PartnershipsTo continue elevating its work around the world, PAI has created a new role for a Chief Strategy Officer, Philanthropy & Partnerships (CSOPP) to oversee the organization's strategic efforts across philanthropy, partnerships, and strategic marketing including brand identity. This is an executive leadership position responsible for the design and implementation of a complete advancement program that successfully grows revenue, deepens engagement, broadens reach, and amplifies awareness of PAI.Reporting into the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Rebecca Finlay, the CSOPP will lift the current Philanthropy & Partnerships program to new levels of success by identifying ways to attract and further engage corporations and foundations - and individuals over time - as strategic sources of philanthropic funding. The CSOPP will also contribute to greater brand clarity, increased visibility of PAI's global work, and guide the work of the Content & Communications team to implement high impact marketing and communications strategies.RESPONSIBILITIESCulture

  • Act as a change agent encouraging the organization to embrace a culture of philanthropy, while readying it for near term fundraising and engagement efforts.
  • Raise the internal profile of the Philanthropy & Partnerships team by creating transparent workflows that allow for greater collaboration and education across departments.
  • Provide training and the right feedback mechanisms to empower the Board and staff to spotlight funding opportunities and transfer conversations to the Philanthropy & Partnerships team.
  • Engage Partners, funders, and donors as thought partners and collective problem-solvers as the community works together to ensure positive outcomes in the field of AI.Philanthropy & Partnerships
    • Partner with the CEO to create, implement, and monitor a strategic growth plan that creates meaningful engagement opportunities with institutional and individual donors; delivers fundraising results; and increases awareness and global visibility for PAI.
    • Leverage the time and talents of the CEO, who is PAI's chief fundraiser, to engage, cultivate, and solicit top donors and prospects.
    • Design a revenue model that deepens existing/forges new relationships with institutional and individual funders, and that creatively raises the philanthropic capacity of the Partner community.
    • Inspire innovation, excellence, and expansive thinking when considering opportunities across the organization and support a more proactive pursuit of funders both nationally and globally.
    • Foster a giving Board and appropriately optimize the Board's networks for philanthropic purposes.
    • Support high-touch stewardship of funder and prospect relationships through donor-centered communications that make the case for support clear.
    • Partner with the Chief Financial & Administrative Officer (CFAO) to establish an advancement services function that includes gift acknowledgements and gift processing.
    • Oversee the creation of an internal advancement communications plan to ensure staff are consistent in messaging, and knowledgeable and engaged ambassadors for PAI.Strategic Marketing
      • Provide counsel to the CEO as the organization shapes its public image and clarifies its brand to enhance and protect its reputation.
      • Develop opportunities to raise awareness of PAI's unique role in influencing systems change.
        • Guide the Content & Communications team to reinforce PAI's identity through brand-building strategies and messaging across all platforms.
        • Craft a strategic marketing plan to recruit and engage a global Partner community via events, communications, and support.
        • Advise on cohesive cross-sector messaging for initiatives and outreach targeting both corporate and nonprofit sectors.
        • Leverage clear leadership directives to drive measurable impact and achieve performance goals.
        • Shape and nurture the profile of the organization through both external (public, media, Partner community) and internal (Board, staff) relationships.
        • Serve as one of the public ambassadors of PAI; engage with media, policymakers, and external stakeholders.Team Leadership
          • Lead and manage the team with a style that is empowering, highly communicative, encourages teamwork, provides mentorship, and creates a high-performance culture.
          • Establish appropriate metrics and goals; ensure that the priorities of the Philanthropy & Partnerships and Content & Communications teams are aligned with the objectives of CEO and supportive of the Board of Directors.
          • Provide a healthy and collaborative remote work environment that values diversity and inclusion and establishes belonging among all regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, national origin, sexual orientation, marital status, age, veteran status, or disability.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONSThe ideal candidate will bring experience leading an advancement organization in a complex research or nonprofit environment, familiarity with brand and program marketing, a depth of experience in institutional funding and stakeholder (e.g., partner, volunteer) relations, an appreciation for the far- reaching impact that AI will have on people and society, and a desire to see that AI-related technologies are used in fair and just ways. Additional qualifications and characteristics include the following:
            • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in advancement as both a senior level manager and frontline gift officer, with a record of accomplishment leading a team.
              • Demonstrated experience with institutional funders in addition to high-net-worth individuals, plus experience with strategic marketing and communications.
                • Growth mindset when evaluating the strengths of existing philanthropic programs and identifying opportunities for improvement and collaboration.
                  • Changemaker with proven experience in developing and operationalizing fundraising strategies to take an organization to a new stage of growth and impact. Evidence of elevating programs to higher performance levels across all metrics.
                  • Strategic thinking abilities with a strong grasp of best practices and a holistic understanding of all aspects of development and marketing.
                  • Track record of successfully partnering with a CEO and Board of Directors and guiding strategic philanthropic conversations at the highest levels.
                  • Skilled as an outstanding coach, mentor, and motivator of professionals, with a dedication to hiring, retaining, and developing outstanding and diverse talent.
                    • Demonstrated commitment to issues of racial equity and social justice.
                      • An interest and curiosity about the history, status, and likely trajectories of the constellation of technologies that are referred to as AI.
                        • Professional credibility and maturity to effectively engage and build authentic relationships, including the ability to build trust and consensus, and to influence widely diverse stakeholders, spanning multiple sectors.
                          • Exceptional communication skills that translate into multiple environments ranging from internal to external audiences.
                          • Models the ethical values of the organization and acts in a selfless manner.
                          • When it is safe to do so, will be able and willing to travel domestically and internationally to develop and maintain relationships with prospects and donors.ABOUT THE PARTNERSHIP ON AIPartnership on AI is a multi-stakeholder organization that brings together representatives from technology companies, academia, civil society organizations, media, and other groups working to better understand the potential upside as well as concerns with the influences of AI technology on people and society. PAI was established to study and formulate best practices on AI technologies, to advance the public's understanding of AI, and to serve as an open platform for discussion and engagement about AI and its influences on people and society.Partnership on AI was formally established in 2016, led by a group of AI researchers representing six of the world's largest technology companies: Apple, Amazon, DeepMind and Google, Facebook, IBM, and Microsoft. In 2017, the addition of six not-for-profit Board members expanded PAI into a multi- stakeholder organization - which now represents a community of nearly 100 Partner organizations.Having experienced significant start-up growth, PAI renewed its strategic plan to focus on increasing impact and building long-term sustainability. From 2021-2026, PAI's theory of change will build on the organization's founding commitment to multi-stakeholder community-building by focusing on the following interconnected and reinforcing points of accountability, and the actions, activities, and expertise required to fulfill them:
                          • International Convenings: Important, timely convenings with diverse stakeholders across the world, including experts in relevant areas and people at highest risk of being harmed by AI applications.
                          • High-Quality Resources: Influential, high quality, accessible, relevant PAI resources, tools and recommendations.
