Located in Northern California, the Joby Aviation team is steadily working toward our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine an air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly and quickly carries you over the traffic congestion below, giving you back the time that otherwise would have spent sitting in traffic. Since 2009, our team has been making this dream a reality, designing and flight testing a prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We're looking for talented individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration and preparing for commercialization with launch targeted in select markets for 2024. - Overview Joby Aviation is looking for an Early Operations and Strategy Manager to help bring Joby's revolutionary aircraft to market. In this role you report directly to the Government Strategy and Operations Lead while driving important company-wide initiatives across all phases from early market exploration, developing and maintaining strategic DoD, USGOV, and Foreign Government partnerships, and executing deliverables through sustained flight operations in DoD and other early markets. As the Early Operations and Strategy Manager, you will be responsible for working cross functionally in policy, business development, and product. This role will focus on supporting external collaborations and strategic partnerships while executing contracted deliverables.

For the near term, the role's focus is weighted toward external government strategy, developing partnerships, and executing on current commitments. Growth in government operations will require an expanded team, led by site managers for each of the USGOV projects. As manager of this team, you will be responsible for technical program managers and cross-functional work between external stakeholders, flight test, engineering, strategy, and additional Joby functions. Over time, the role may shift to partnerships and strategy beyond the early market and government vertical.
This role will develop and provide strategic vision to cross-functional teams and projects to ensure their successful and timely delivery. This role will work across the organization to align organizational plans and priorities with its long-term business strategy. As a critical part of the team, this role gives you an opportunity to collaborate, drive strategic initiatives, shape communications, and form the culture at all levels of the organization. Due to the global nature of the role, 20% travel may be required. Ideal candidates have considerable experience working with government and Department of Defense stakeholders, strategic and operational planning, and detailed execution. They should have exceptional judgment, experience prioritizing projects, and be effective communicators to all audiences. Finally, they should have a strong leadership background and be an exceptional team player able to operate in a fast- paced, demanding, and rewarding environment. Responsibilities

  • Report directly to and collaborate with the Government Strategy and Operations Lead
  • Develop and maintain USGOV, Department of, and Foreign Government partnerships in line with Joby's strategic objectives
  • - Attend cross-functional meetings and deliver on objectives
  • Implement efficient and effective processes to drive annual and quarterly planning and to develop our annual charter, 3-year, and 5-year strategic plans to grow the business
  • Lead strategic initiatives within the team with the goal of bringing to market Joby's revolutionary aircraft
  • Partner with cross-functional teams, specifically Strategy, Commercial Operations, Government Affairs, and Product to develop, implement, and improve upon the Joby aircraft and user experience for flight operations
  • Identify and develop business opportunities in the government sector, write new business proposals, and help negotiate agreements with strategic partners
  • Partner with government customers to fulfill contract milestones and key deliverables requiring cross-functional collaboration across Joby's technical teams
  • Lead and supervise the design, development, and execution of early flight operations supporting our government customers
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders to develop key messaging, a successful communications framework, and presentation materials Required
    • Advanced Business Degree, MBA or equivalent working experience, and Bachelor's degree in management, aviation, engineering, or relevant field
    • 6+ years of experience in the aviation field and/or business development environment with responsibility for full-scope strategic project execution
    • Experience working directly with people at all levels, including executive and C- suite level, both inside and outside of a company
    • Experience with government innovation incubators and Department of Defense agencies -
    • Experience managing multiple tasks with timelines and shifting priorities
    • Experience cultivating internal and external relationships
    • Experience developing and driving strategy and execution plans
    • Experience operating autonomously across multiple teams, demonstrated critical thinking and thought leadership
    • Understanding of go-to-market themes and experience in a sales or sales adjacent organization
    • Previous work with an engineering team to develop and maintain a project timeline toward aircraft type certification, manufacturing introduction, and entry into service
    • Experience with aerospace or electrical vehicle projects
