Electrical Engineer for Target Diagnostics - Livermore, CA Science and Technology on a Mission!For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place. We have an opening for an Electrical Engineer. You will develop, deploy and maintain experimental instrumentation in the Target Diagnostics Systems group, within the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science Directorate (NIF & PS) Directorate. You will be required solve technical problems, regularly collaborate with scientists, engineers and technical personnel. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering & Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate. This position will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level. Essential Duties- Apply system level design principals in the development of Target Diagnostics. Activities include collaborate with stakeholders to develop requirements, create baseline designs, evaluate performance trade-offs, identify FMEA's (failure modes and effects analysis), determine system interfaces, develop cost and schedule plans and present design reviews.- Develop hardware designs based on approved requirements. Responsibilities include hardware prototypes, instrumentation performance evaluation and documentation; integration plan with interfacing work teams, develop installation, commissioning and performance procedures.- Perform periodic maintenance activities on diagnostics. Responsibilities include performance evaluation, calibration (offline and online), troubleshooting, data analysis, data archiving and test report preparation.- Provide technical support for PLC (programmable logic controller) machine and personal safety systems. Activities include installation, maintenance, modification and troubleshooting.- Serve as technical contact for the Target Diagnostic System and its components to respond in real-time to off-normal occurrences.- Interface with immediate supervisors, and project leads or other exempt professional in the group or division to complete various projects. - Perform other duties as assigned.In Addition at the SES.2 Level- Provide engineering solutions to resolve moderately complex technical and programmatic issues.- Perform independent technical analysis to provide solutions for a diverse range of moderate to complex issues.- Select methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to obtain results based on analysis of multiple, largely identifiable factors. Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering, Electronic Engineering Technology, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience.- Fundamental knowledge of electronics theory, including analog and digital circuitry.- Ability to develop and read schematics, independently troubleshoot and repair equipment to the component level, and contribute to circuitry enhancements.- Experience with a range of laboratory test equipment including oscilloscopes, digital multi-meters, signal generators, power supplies, spectrum analyzers.- Ability to climb stairs, lift equipment, or stand for long periods of time.- Ability to work in an area of Beryllium and radiologically-contaminated areas.- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.In Addition at the SES.2 Level- Experience identifying, defining, and solving multi-disciplinary problems in a timely, cost effective manner.- Comprehensive knowledge of system level electrical design, operation, or testing processes and the ability to meet schedule deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.- Experience in prototype development, testing, and fielding, as well as electronics design and analysis. Desired Qualifications - Experience working and/or assembly and operation with RF (radio frequency), high-vacuum.- Proficiency with CAD (computer-aided design), PCB (printed circuit board) generation environments and developing LabVIEW based software control programs. Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
