Structural Design Engineer

Company: LBL
Location: San Francisco
Posted on: March 19, 2023

Job Description:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) Engineering Division has an immediate opening for a Structural Design Engineer to join the team. This is a matrix position within the engineering division that supports various projects at LBNL including, but not limited to, the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE), the Gamma-Ray Energy Tracking Array (GRETA), the Advanced Light Source (ALS), the Advanced Light Source Upgrade project, and Cosmic Microwave Background Stage 4 (CMB-S4), as well as engineering support for the wide array of science and technology at LBNL. It's an exciting time to join our growing team!

The first assignment of a successful candidate will be to support the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) project by performing a variety of mechanical engineering tasks such as part and assembly design, structural analysis, installation process development, and drawing review.

DUNE is a scientific project managed by the United States Department of Energy. DUNE will consist of two neutrino detectors placed in the world's most intense neutrino beam. The so-called Near Detector will record particle interactions near the source of the beam at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia, Illinois. A second, much larger Far Detector will be installed more than a kilometer underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota - 1,300 kilometers downstream of the source. These detectors will enable scientists to search for new subatomic phenomena and potentially transform our understanding of neutrinos and their role in the universe.

This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs as well as the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

DUNE-Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Design components for a cryostat (cryogenic tank) which holds 200 m3 of liquid argon at 87 K and supports neutrino detector modules.
  • Develop heavy duty structural steel weldments to support a 1000 ton detector assembly.
  • Perform structural and thermal analysis using simplified calculations and detailed finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Develop and execute prototyping plans to validate key design concepts.
  • Plan installation and integration activities at the underground DUNE Near Detector site in coordination with multiple detector groups, site facilities, and Fermilab.
  • Travel occasionally to participate in collaboration meetings and/or workshops, meet with colleagues, and manage suppliers. Job Responsibilities:
    • Apply mechanical engineering best practices to design and deliver components that meet the stringent requirements of high energy physics projects.
    • Work independently to prepare design specifications, analyses, and technical memos for review by scientific, engineering, and management personnel.
    • Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary and international team of scientists, engineers, postdocs, and students while exhibiting LBNL's workplace standards and stewardship values.
    • Participate in technical and planning meetings by preparing presentation content, defining agendas, and hosting as needed. Required Qualifications:
      • Minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree, 3 years with a Master's degree, or equivalent work experience.
      • Extensive knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts, practices, and tools.
      • Experience managing the fabrication of heavy duty steel structures for building structures, shipbuilding, infrastructure construction, or similar projects.
      • Experience with weld specification, methodology, and overseeing the procurement and fabrication processes of welded components (especially large welded structures).
      • Experience with CAD and FEA software (the DUNE project uses Solidworks and ANSYS).
      • Ability to work in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues.
      • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications:
        • Experience with large assembly management: interfaces, bill of material (BOM) structure, product lifecycle management (PLM).
        • Experience with Design For Manufacturing (DFM) principles.
        • Experience generating supporting documentation to support quality control and installation tasks.
        • Familiarity with cryogenic systems.
        • Experience with planning and leading complex projects, including management of cost and schedule. If hired at level 2:

The full salary range of this position is between $7,469 to $12,600 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $8,401 to $10,268 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

          If hired at level 3:

The full salary range of this position is between $9,135 to $15,242 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $10,277 to $12,560 per month depending upon candidates' full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

          • This is a 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to a Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
          • Full-time (M-F), monthly paid, exempt from overtime pay.
          • Salary is commensurate with experience.
          • Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities.
          • Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at Berkeley Lab. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
          • Work will be performed primarily at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA 94720. Hybrid work arrangements may be available, allowing for telework several days per week.
