MTC, in coordination with Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol,
the Bay Area transit agencies, and other stakeholders, has
partnered on projects to improve regional transportation system
management and mobility. The 511 Traveler Information program,
managed by MTC, encompasses several key components, systems, and
projects that support the day-to-day collection and dissemination
of traveler information with the goal of assisting travelers with
travel decisions and providing connections to several regional
transportation programs. A key element of the 511 Traveler
Information program in achieving its goal is the delivery of
quality data to end user applications, third party trip planning
tools, and researchers.
The 511 Data Engineer position will be filled at the Associate
level and will be under the general direction of the Principal
Traveler Information Technology Manager. This position will be
responsible for design, development, testing, deployment, and
maintenance of 511 SF Bay's backend cloud-based, open-source
relational database management system. The candidate is a
self-motivated individual, who can assume the responsibility of
managing and operating a critical traveler information database.
The ideal candidate will be able to work in a highly collaborative
team environment and have the ability to communicate complex
technical topics effectively with internal and external
stakeholders. The candidate will follow the software engineering
life cycle management and best practices for all software
artifacts.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and
abilities:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
An appropriate combination of education and experience that has
provided the required knowledge, skills and abilities is
qualifying. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications
is:
Education: A Bachelor's degree in computer science, information
systems, or related field. A Master's degree is desirable.
(Applicants with a degree issued from an institution outside the
United States must have their transcripts evaluated by an academic
accrediting service and provide proof of equivalency along with
their application.) A Bachelor's degree in software engineering or
data science is preferred.
Experience: Five years of increasingly complex and responsible work
experience performing computer and network needs assessment; and
installing, maintaining and evaluating computer equipment, software
applications and local area networks, including the equivalent of
two years as an Information Systems Specialist II in MTC.
Experience in developing, maintaining, and operating a cloud-based
backend database system that supports high volume data requests
through open APIs is preferred. License/Certificate: Possession of
a valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving
record, or the ability to provide alternate transportation which is
approved by the appointing authority.
