It's an exciting time at Kura as we gear up to make a high impact in design, process development, and launching our initial product - a standalone enterprise and consumer-facing AR headset with a 150-degree field-of-view using custom displays and optics. This position has potential to grow into one of Kura's principal optomechanical engineering roles based on milestones, accomplishments, and performance. We are in search of skilled optomechanical engineers with experience in designing and assembling high-tolerance imaging systems and confidence in handling very small, sensitive, fragile, and/or clean parts. We are looking for someone with a design-for-production mindset who can apply their mechanical and optical engineering expertise to solve problems in reliable, creative, and insightful ways. Our ideal candidate has a strong fundamental mechanical and optical engineering background, hands-on prototyping experience, proficient 3D CAD capabilities, and experience designing and manufacturing consumer technology products.Responsibilities* Drive development of optomechanical system requirements, design, testing, and assembly advanced imaging and display systems, using tools such as Solidworks, CodeV, and Zemax.* Design optics and display holders according to overall space requirements for various manufacturing processes, e.g. CNC machining, diamond turning, 3D printing, and soft-and-hard-tooled molding processes. Incorporate manufacturing tolerances and requirements from shops or machines of choice..* Design testing jigs for optical and display components with features such as adjustable positioning of components. * Structural analysis using multiphysics software such as Comsol and ANSYS.. * Test optical components and assembly. This includes operating professional equipment such as MTF test benches, profilometers, and CMMs from commercial manufacturers, e.g. Trioptics and Zygo, as well as building basic test setups (e.g. interferometers for measuring flatness or surface roughness) from scratch when needed. Also includes correlating measured performances with simulated data, identifying discrepancies, and suggesting design changes to avoid these discrepancies.* Write and run basic test scripts in e.g. Matlab. Work with optical, software and system engineers to develop and document a design and testing workflow.-- Model, build, test, and refine prototypes and characterization test systems.* Do supply chain diligence; search for components, shops, and equipment needed for completing the work within budget. Set up and operate newly acquired equipment and parts as necessary to complete work.* Work with high-precision, high-accuracy, extremely clean components and build assemblies with high (micron-level) tolerance. Confidently handle components of extreme value (e.g. one-off components with 100-day lead time and six-figure price tags).* Work across the full product development cycle, from concept inception to shipping product* Communicate with vendors, manufacturers and experts around the world. Generate standard, tolerances engineering drawing to unambiguously illustrate design details and requirements. Abide by strict confidentiality guidelines and efficiently communicate without making unauthorized disclosures.-- * Communicate with manufacturers and work with them to design workholdings and testing jigs for low and high volume production. Example processes include optical assembly and gluing, coating, molding, and surface inspection, general lab equipment such as soldering irons, lab power supplies, oscilloscopes, hand tools, and lasers to operate and test highly sensitive devices such as micro-displays and custom optical components, automatic glue dispenser, 6 degree-of-freedom robot arms, solder irons, lab power supplier, oscilloscopes, to run and test highly sensitive devices like nano-sec laser, micro led samples, customized optics, etc.Minimum Qualifications* Proficiency in engineering CAD tools, preferably Solidworks.* MS/BS in Mechanical Engineering and/or Optical Engineering, and equivalent practical industrial experience.* 3+ years of mechanical engineering/optical engineering experience design for high-volume production and testing.* Knowledge of materials and material properties; e.g. plastics, metals, adhesives, glasses, circuit boards and flex circuit boards, as well as experience with suppliers of such materials.* Experience in communicating with suppliers and manufacturers via formal specifications and engineering drawings. Able to provide final drawings to custom part suppliers without making mistakes. Able to communicate confidential information on a need-to-know basis in a timely fashion without making unauthorized disclosures.* Practical experience with optical metrology and testing; for example, MTF testing, curvature measurement, and surface profilometry. Able to design reliable testing procedures, and transfer these procedures from low-volume prototyping to high-volume manufacturing.* Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing techniques (stamping, machining injection molding, etc.).* Confident hands-on capability in building practical testing prototypes using breadboard and custom parts.* Sufficient experience in major optical design tools (CodeV, Zemax, and LightTools) to run analyses, inspect files, and export models and drawings.* Familiarity with commercial optical testing and metrology equipment. Able to confidently operate rented equipment without causing damage. Able to develop and build test setups using a combination of off-the-shelf (e.g. Thorlabs) parts and custom parts that generate reliable and consistent results. * Proven ability to handle, work with, and assemble delicate components with high cleanliness requirements of extreme value. * Team player - able to communicate and work with optical, mechanical, display, system, and IC engineers on the team. Willing to learn other fields as needed to work with these engineers.* Ability to generate workflow manuals, documentation, drawings and illustrations for both internal and external parties.* Result driven, able to hold tight deadlines maintain responsibility for completion of own tasks.* Knowledge of optics component mounting, interfaces, and adhesive bonding.* Experience with or ability to sourcing optical adhesive and materials.Preferred Qualifications* MS in Optical Engineering/Optical Science or/and Mechanical Engineering.* 5+ years of opto-mechanical experience for high volume and high procesion R&D products.* Knowledge and practical experience optics manufacturing techniques (glass lens, plastic lens, coatings, molding).* Experience in consumer electronics product or semiconductor process development and/or manufacturing.* Experience with mass production of systems requiring active optical alignment.* Experience delivering multiple successful consumer products to production from concept inception to shipping product.* Familiarity with optical design basics.TypeContract, part-time, full-timeContactscareers@kura.techKura's office/lab at San Mateo, California, United States
