GRIFFIN NURSERY SCHOOL IS LOOKING FOR TWO PROFESSIONAL PRESCHOOL
OUR TEACHER PROFILE
We are looking for two kind, mature, sensitive preschool teachers
with natural appreciation for and rapport with young children, at
least two years of preschool teaching experience each, and the
twelve basic ECE units or more.
We would like our new staff members to understand the developmental
norms and changes of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds and to enjoy the
variety of their temperaments and learning styles. Our new teachers
will skillfully use active listening with children in conflict. You
will have keen, quiet, and relaxed supervision skills on the
playground. You will also provide the clear limits and the
flexibility preschoolers need; and you will be their comrades in
exploration. As two among six staff members you will try every day
to be communicative, noncompetitive, responsible, detailed, and
good-humored. When you fail, you'll pick yourselves up (with
supportive people around to help) and try again. You will have
artistic and ecological inclinations. And you will want to grow in
your jobs and stay awhile.
Since 1955 Griffin Nursery School has been a play-based,
indoor-outdoor preschool in the Elmwood District of Berkeley. We
have a year-round program.
Griffin is strongly social-emotional in emphasis, and we think this
format makes our graduates truly kindergarten-ready when they leave
us. They have spent two years thoroughly undergoing the stages of
early childhood socialization: Attaching to another adult outside
home and family; making a first friend; sharing their friend with
another child; opening up to their own multiplying friendships;
working and playing in alternating pairs, foursomes, and fivesomes;
and becoming interested in their roles as community members.
Their sociodramatic play has enabled them to cut and paste their
thoughts and emotions with other children's in the rich code of
language; and through this multifaceted activity they have
developed executive functions like drawing conclusions, predicting,
and controlling impulses in order to adhere to the rules of the
Modest amounts of teacher-directed group times have provided them
with time and place to take turns talking and listening; make
community rituals and solve community problems; learn through
rhythm, music, and movement; author stories and produce story
plays; and hear and discuss books, broadening their knowledge.
Numeracy and literacy have been built into their daily occupations.
For instance, when a child, approaching the playground, looks at
the sign that says '4' and counts the accompanying picture of four
faces, she is practicing one-to-one correspondence in the act of
determining whether there is room for her. If there isn't space at
the moment, she learns to deal with disappointment, create a
visualization that she will have a turn, and write her name on a
nearby waiting list.
Most importantly, we help our children become good citizens---that
is, confident and thoughtful members of a community.
