Job Summary The UCSF School of Medicine (SOM) seeks a candidate with diverse perspectives and experiences to join our team as Associate Dean for Medical Education. The purpose of the position of Associate Dean for Medical Education is threefold: 1) develop, direct and analyze the delivery of medical education services and policies to learners, administrative units, academic departments, and other schools; 2) along with the vice dean, direct analytical and policy development for education programs; and 3) resource management - provide budgetary, human resource, and operational oversight for the continuum of medical education, including post-baccalaureate program, medical students, residents, fellows and continuing medical education. The Associate Dean reports directly to the Vice Dean for Education and is a member of the Vice Dean's executive leadership team and as such has a leadership role within the larger UCSF community. The Associate Dean has overall responsibility for planning, policy support, resource management and delivery of all medical education services in the School of Medicine including 115 employees in 11 units across sites in San Francisco; a $35M annual budget; and 18,000 asf in facilities.The Associate Dean for Medical Education is responsible for the human resource management, budget, and for the continuum of medical education; and for medical education and all health professions, is responsible for technology, facilities/space, and program development. Develops and implements the strategic vision for the organization's health professions education programs. Defines short and long term goals, and directs through subordinate managers the achievement of academic excellence through faculty development and educational research, learning technology and instructional support, program and learner evaluations, institutional reporting on education, and accreditation and policy.Directs through subordinate managers multiple large and complex critical programs impacting broad constituencies across major portions of the organization. These include campus-wide services such as the Kanbar Simulation/American Heart Association Training Center and the Anatomy Learning Center which provide services to all UCSF schools and to UCSF Health. Administrative oversight of the UCSF Main Campus, UC Berkeley Joint Medical Program, UCSF-Fresno, UC Merced state-funded San Joaquin Valley Program in Medical Education (PRIME) Bachelors-MD degree program. Identifies objectives, manages mission-critical human, financial, and physical resources, and functions with an extremely high degree of autonomy, as demonstrated with strategic goal setting for medical education, oversight of 115 staff, and fiscal oversight of a $35M annual operating budget. Physical resources include a development and oversight of human anatomy lab and simulation training centers, as well as administrative facilities in Clinical Sciences, Kalmanovitz Library, and Mission Center building. Accountable for formulating and administering policies and programs for major functions, such as policy over data privacy and security education, and programs such as simulation and the SJV PRIME program. Operational or program results can affect overall organization-wide performance and reputation. Directs through subordinate managers the development of strategic goals and objectives to achieve accountability and stewardship of university resources in a manner consistent with system-wide objectives and initiatives. Department Description The School of Medicine's Medical Education unit situated in the Dean's Office is the administrative unit that oversees all health professions education programs for the School of Medicine which includes 1,200 teaching faculty, 650 medical students, 1500 residents and fellows, and 30,000 continuing education activities each year. For the past ten years, UCSF has been the only medical school ranked in the top five for research and for primary care training. The Associate Dean for Medical Education is a member of the Executive Leaders groups within the Office of Medical Education. This group sets all strategic directives for medical education across the enterprise. Medical Education is responsible for ensuring the highest quality learning and teaching environment for our programs and the support and development of over 115 staff. Required Qualifications Advanced knowledge about health professions education industry.Demonstrated application of advanced concepts, practices and procedures within higher education.Innovative thinking skills to improve upon industry standards and best practices.Advanced knowledge of campus, medical center, HR and university policies and processes.Knowledge of relevant federal, state and local laws and regulations including national accrediting organizations and state and federal licensing and regulatory offices.Leadership abilities to oversee multiple functions through subordinate managers.Demonstrated leadership skills appropriately grant autonomy while knowing when to intervene.Ability to identify common goals, develop division strategies, and collaborate with senior management across the organization to implement long term projects.Advanced skills implementing major change initiatives.Knowledge of organization structure and change management skills to streamline systems and design processes to improve efficiency of program operations.Interpersonal skills to maintain relationships with peers, learners, multidisciplinary team members, senior management, and assigned staff and develop relationships with industry leaders.Ability to work collaboratively with others through soliciting and incorporating their ideas when appropriate, being critical about information and applying it appropriately, and promoting and developing others.Advanced critical thinking ability.Advanced ability to identify problems before they arise and solve complex, wide-reaching problems when no precedent exists.Verbal and written communication skills to tailor style according to the situation and handle critical and sensitive situations.Persuasive skills to negotiate and get buy in from stakeholders with varying priorities.Expertise in industry technology.Ability to run complex analyses and propose improvements to the organization's use of information technology to enhance teaching and learning practices.Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training required.10+ years of directly-related experience including 10+ years project lead, supervisory and/or management experience. Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in related area preferred.
