Join us and start doing your life's best work.SMThe Financial Counselor is essential to the overall Revenue Cycle flow for the hospital. The position is responsible for assessing all Outpatient, Trauma, and Inpatient Admissions to assure the demographic and financial information is correct and validated. In addition, the Financial Counselor will review the Outpatient and Inpatient elective procedures on the Scheduled Patients List for all related areas of the hospital.The Financial Counselor identifies, investigates, determines, applies and disseminates information relative to insurance verification of account-specific patient admissions including those instances when the source of a patient's financial means to pay for services is not readily apparent. The Financial Counselor ensures that all appropriate insurance notifications occur in established timeframes and that all insurance data is correctly entered into the patient accounting system.The Financial Counselor interviews and provides patients with technical and specialized financial payment arrangements prior to or during the time services are rendered. The position requires collection of necessary deposits, co-payments or co-insurance as determined by patient's insurance benefits. Financial Counselors identify potential financial concerns, assist patients, family members or representatives with State, Federal, local and other entitlement programs available to them. As the position must discuss financial matters with either the ill patient or his/her representatives, the incumbent has the responsibility to execute his/her duties with sensitivity and caring while still achieving account resolution objectives. The Financial Counselor is distinguished from the lower-level but related class of Admitting Representative by the more focused, detailed, and complex knowledge and skill required.You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma / GED (or higher)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of registration process and the integration of the registration system with other departments
  • Extensive computer operation and medical terminology
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential requirement of this role. UnitedHealth Group will adhere to all federal, state and local regulations as well as all client requirements and will obtain necessary proof of vaccination prior to employment to ensure compliance. Preferred Qualifications:
    • 2+ years experience in the classification of Admitting Representative/Patient Financial Counselor at an acute care hospital
    • 2+ years of recent experience in a medical setting with emphasis on Insurance Medicare, MediCal, County programs and Financial Counseling
    • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and other regulations pertaining to acute care requirements and reimbursement
    • Knowledge of health care insurance carriers, HMOs. PPO's, government, and state agencies
    • Experience in regard to third party payer and medical terminology as related to billing requirements
    • EPIC experience Soft Skills:
      • Ability to maintain confidential information
      • Typing skills
      • Multi-tasking, working in multiple systems at a time
      • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and exercise good judgement and the ability to problem solve independently
      • Effectiveness in written communication skills
