Vitalant Research Institute (VRI) *************************************** is seeking applicants for the Director of Administrative Affairs. VRI has two campuses, San Francisco and Denver, and this position will be located in San Francisco and support both campuses. The Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit research division of Vitalant, the second largest blood banking organization in the United States. VRI s research encompasses Transfusion Medicine, Immunology, Virology, Cellular Therapeutics, Epidemiology and Health Policy Research. VRI has an annual budget of - $15 million with 10 principal investigators (PIs) and 6 cores. Current funding is from a variety of sponsors, including Federal agencies, private foundations, industry, and internal. VRI is an Affiliate of the University of California, San Francisco through the Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI). This is a hands-on managerial position, providing oversight and leadership of all administrative functions, including pre- and post-award grant and contract activities, research compliance, single audit, institute budget, administrative oversight and support for the scientific staff, facilities, and safety for the organization. This position reports to the Senior Vice President of Research and Scientific Programs, and manages a team of 7-9 staff. The position serves as the primary administrative liaison with funding agencies. To be successful in the role, it is important that the Director of Administrative Affairs build collaborative and supportive relationships with external sponsors, internal PIs and scientific staff, and senior Vitalant corporate leadership. This position provides expertise for VRI staff on policies, procedures, and best practices related to all research administration functions. This position is part of the VRI leadership team and participates in strategic planning, new investigator recruitments, development of academic affiliations, intellectual property development, and collaborations with other Vitalant divisions. The successful candidate will hold at minimum a Bachelor s degree, have progressive experience in a sophisticated research grants/contracts office, and have extensive knowledge and understanding of management principles, federal practices, regulations, policies and guidelines for grants management and sponsored research. NIH experience is required (NIH and/or FDA contract experience is strongly preferred). Along with experience working in a scientific research environment, candidates must have demonstrable experience working with program officers at federal agencies, and effectively and collaboratively with PIs. We are seeking an experienced individual with a broad set of skills encompassing the research administration field, including a portfolio that demonstrates most of the following proficiencies: * Managing a team of individuals with a focus on employee development and problem solving for the research institute. * Interpreting Sponsor regulations including but not limited to the NIH GPS, relevant CFRs, FAR, and HHSAR. * In conjunction with the Vitalant legal department, developing, reviewing, negotiating, and resolving contract language for grants, contracts, industry agreements, subcontracts, sub-awards, and other agreements, including Memorandum of Understanding, Material Transfer Agreements, Data Use Agreements, Confidential Disclosure Agreements / Non-disclosure Agreements, etc. * Overseeing VRI s budget and single audit. * Identifying and resolving pre- and/or post award obstacles to successful sponsored projects. * Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and compliance issues. Preferred Qualifications * Ten or more years of experience in research administration.Expert knowledge of OMB Circulars and Federal Acquisition Regulations. * Experience managing teams to handle multiple large, complex projects simultaneously. * A high level of proficiency in a variety of computer applications. * Ability to multi-task, effectively delegate, and follow through under tight deadlines. * A demonstrated commitment to excellence and an exceptionally strong work ethic. * Excellent technical and interpersonal communication skills. * Certified Research Administrator (CRA, CPRA, CFRA) certification highly desirable Position is open until filled.
